<span style="color: #674ea7;">Arrival Sunday afternoon for a calming and peaceful introduction in the hall. We stored our yoga equipment in the hall we were to use for our yoga practice and Yoga 5 Day Remedial Therapeutic Course at Domus Mariae at Woodford </span><br />
<span style="color: #674ea7;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="color: #674ea7;">After introductions we all retired to our rooms. The room was on the second floor, but a lift is available to get all to their rooms. My room was imaculately clean and ready for my use. It was sparse but perfect for my bedroom needs. At the end of the hall were kitchnette facilities for drinks and breakfast.</span><br />

<span style="color: #674ea7;">What a wonderful opportunity to wake up and go to the hall and do my personal practice without any of the burdens from home. These daily practices without distractions have allowed me to develop my practice and allow work on class plans for my yoga students.</span><br />
<span style="color: #674ea7;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="color: #674ea7;">Each Morning at 10am to 11.30am we had a led yoga practice taking consideration of the differing Multiple Sclerosis problems and adapted with those considerations in mind. I knew I was lucky to be more able bodied than some, but my little extra needs were gently dealt with. My hands are weak and I could not hold the knees in position for certain poses and they soon came to support me. Even though my core is strong enough to give support, that would have not provided the benefits the asana was supposed to give. Both Ineke and the helper Mary helped me during our daily practice to ensure I practiced properly and got the full benefit. It was greatly appreciated.</span><br />

<span style="color: #674ea7;">At noon we settled into a comfortable position and was guided into a 20 minute mediation with Ineke. By Friday I was consciously aware of how much more settled I was in myself, simply by taking a 20 minute quiet time to mediate and focus on my breath. </span><br />

<span style="color: #674ea7;">The mediatation was immediately followed by lunch, that took into account everyone’s dietary needs (and for a group of 9 there many variations!) and they produced a delicious lunchtime meal.</span><br />

<span style="color: #674ea7;">After lunch until 3.30, it was our own free time. I personally took the opportunity to take a nap, after the manditory mobile call to husband from the room.</span><br />
<span style="color: #674ea7;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="color: #674ea7;">The theme of this retreat was nutrition, especially considering Ayurveda. A new subject to me, we did a test and my Dosha and Gunas and apparently I am rajestic Kapha. It was interesting and kind of scary how a simple test can pin down the elements of who I am. There are special diets that support the type of person you are but, I definitely need to digest the information before I change the food I choose to digest. It is quite empowering to think I could actually take some control over this nuisance that is Multiple Sclerosis with a simple change to my diet. I am looking into an alternitive to dairy products. Apparently there has been a lot of study into how dairy has a detrimental effort on people with Multiple Soclerosis, although I think it could be the population as a whole. Lots of homework for me, and perhaps share with the family at home.</span><br />

It was a calm moment to share music, poems, stories that were important to us. Chanting simply means singing [rhythmic speaking] certain sounds or words. It is a commonly used spiritual practice and hence is mostly synonymous with religious rituals. Chanting calms our emotions and helps meditate better. But do we know that it produces positive energy and aids in enhancing our overall health?<br />

Let us have a close look at some of the benefits chanting has on our body, mind and soul.<br />

It is surprising to know that chanting benefits our body in so many ways:<br />

* A research done by Alfred Tomatis of the French Academy of Science and Medicine found that chanting sounds have a therapeutic effect on the body. It soothes all our bodily systems and activates the body’s natural healing process. It also plays a part in reversing heart disease.<br />

* According to a research done at the Cleveland University, USA, the rhythmic tones involved in chanting create a melodious effect in the body called the Neuro-linguistic effect [NLE]. When we know the meaning of the mantra we are reciting, it creates a Psycholinguistic effect [PLE] on the body. The NLE and the PLE effects are by-products of the production and spreading of curative chemicals in the brain. The research concludes that this is the real reason why chanting provokes curative effects in us.<br />

* A study by Dr Alan Watkins [senior lecturer in neuroscience at Imperial College London] revealed that while chanting, our heart rate and blood pressure dip to its lowest in the day. Doctors say that even listening to chants normalises adrenalin levels, brain wave pattern and lowers cholesterol levels.<br />

* Using chants as part of our exercise regimen, helps facilitate movement and flow of the body during exercise.<br />
<br />
* Studies prove that making chants a part of our daily yoga can help achieve greater weight loss in a shorter span of time.<br />

* Neuroscientist Marian Diamond from the University of California found that chanting helps block the release of stress hormones and increases immune function. It also keeps our muscles and joints flexible for a long time.<br />

An 8-week study was carried out at the Samarya Center for Integrated Movement Therapy and Ashtanga Yoga in Seattle, WA, to see the effects of chanting on general well-being and particularly respiratory functions in people suffering from mild-to-severe depression. The results showed that chanting helped participants increase control over their breath and expiratory output level. The participants claimed that chanting reduced their anxiety and improved their mood. Researchers thus concluded that if done at least once a week, chanting is an effective means of enhancing people’s moods in the immediate present, as well as over an extended period of time.<br />

It is good to have some yoga with others when you are not the teacher. I was going to be a few minutes and so I sent <a href="https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/ASP/home.asp?studioid=3223">my teacher Leah</a>, <br />

It takes about one and half hours to get there, an hour class, and the same journey home. Perfectly OK with me, I can just sit, read the free papers and do the Suduko, read a book and have some quality me time. of course, it does not always go to plan.<br />

Leah rang me as I was on the last part of my journey, almost at the centre and explained she was going to be later. Could I start the class, naturally I said Yes of course. Naturally I though O M G.....<br />
<br />
I did not have enough time to suffer with my usual nerves. I arrived, took a deep breathe. Apologised Leah's behalf and confidently advised Leah would be joining us shortly and I am only preparing us for the practice. They had no idea how much I hoped my statement was sincerely accurate.<br />
<br />
I then asked the standard is anybody new yoga or does anyone have any conditions or pains I should no about. So naturally, on my day when I was busy bluffing confidence there was a newbie who had <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scoliosis">scoliosis</a> and was a teenage with all the associate teen problems. Ok I told a deep breathe and silently to myself thanks the universe for it's kind gift.<br />
<br />
I got the class in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savasana">Savasana</a> with hand on their tummy and to observe their natural breathe for a few moments. I went to my student and told her that all she has to do is breath and she is practising yoga, if during the practice and she suffers pain or too much discomfort she should <a href="http://www.yogamovement.com/resources/benefits.html">STOP</a> and return to this relaxation pose.<br />

I then continue with some joint loosening, breathe work, simple stretches and Leah arrived. She offered to take over immediately. No... let me finish my sequence and it will give you a chance to settle into class. After the bridge i returned the class to Savasana and there were a few giggles when I stated that magically their teacher was about to change. I told Leah about our teen yogi with specifics.<br />
<br />
It helped my confidence tremendously as I listened to Leah giving instructions and advice that mirrored exactly my instruction... Thank goodness! It has been the best solution for our new student because we both gave the same advice, reinforcing the teaching we gave.<br />
<br />
To help my confidence and also to mentor my skills, Leah suggested we could do this more often. I naturally verbally agreed, even if mind was screaming..... No I am scared!<br />
<br />
The universe had obviously decided my time was NOW and knows the less time I have to prepare and plan, the less nervous I am. Even though I have not consciously prepared for the class my instinctive knowledge for was perfect for the <a href="http://yogademystified.com/the-core-essay/big-idea-3-the-present-moment/">moment</a>.<br />
<br />
There is lot in my life at the moment but this class was a valuable lesson.<br />

I have discovered that dispite working all since I was 16 and paid my<br />
national isurance contributions. I was diagnosed with Multiple<br />
Sclerosis but managed to continue in my work as a mortgage adviser for<br />
the Yorkshire Building Society Croydon branch and their charitable<br />
represent for London South East. I have spoken the National insurance<br />
people who are sending me a statement of all the national insurance I<br />
have paid. When I was on Permanent Health Insurance no National<br />
insurance was paid for me. NOW when I need help I have been rejected by<br />
the system. IT IS NOT FAIR - I have paid decades of National Insurance<br />
and it counts for NOTHING apparently and I been rejected on ESA claim<br />
because of it... then today I have been for an ESA medical, I went but<br />
what will it achieve.<br />

But they also seem to protect myelin from attack by the immune system.</div><div class="story-body">There is also some evidence that these cells might also be able to repair damaged tissue.</div><div class="story-body"><strong>Hold potential</strong></div><div class="story-body">Dr Doug Brown, of the MS Society, said: "These experiments have confirmed that these stem cells hold that potential - but these need to be confirmed in large scale clinical trials."</div><div class="story-body">There is some way to go, however, before laboratory promise can be translated into a treatment that can be offered to patients. </div><div class="story-body">The international team will begin so-called phase two clinical trials in six months' time designed to determine whether the treatment is safe and effective. </div><div class="story-body">It will take five years to carry out and assess the results of the trials after which large phase three trials may be required.</div><div class="story-body">But Dr Muraro believes that the stem cell approach has real potential.</div><div class="story-body">He said: "The great hope is the fact that we are exploiting a biological system that has evolved over millions of years and harnessing it for treatment that takes advantage of the stem cells' flexibility."</div><div class="story-body">Sir Richard Sykes, chair of the UK Stem Cell Foundation, said Dr Muraro's research was the first of its kind to take place in the UK.</div><div class="story-body">"Given the high incidence of MS in the UK in comparison to other countries, I am delighted that we have at last progressed stem cell research to this stage, which will bring much-needed hope to so many people affected by this devastating condition."</div><div class="story-body"><em>Correction 29 July 2011: This story has been amended after the MS Society corrected a statement it had made suggesting stem cells from the brains of aborted foetuses had been used in research it was funding. In a draft decision, England and Wales independent body that recommends whether drugs should be covered by the National Health Service, decided that at £20,000 a year fingolimod <i>"would not be a cost effective use of NHS resources."</i> Thousands of <a href="http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/37556.php" title="What is Multiple Sclerosis? What is MS?">multiple sclerosis</a> sufferers who do not respond to current medications were disappointed.<br />

EU regulators gave fingolimod preliminary marketing approval at the beginning of this year. <span class="goog_qs-tidbit goog_qs-tidbit-0">Fingolimod is made and marketed by Novartis under the brand name</span> <a href="http://www.medilexicon.com/drugs/gilenya.php" target="_blank" title="More information on Gilenya (fingolimod). External link">Gilenya</a>. The company applied for it to be covered by the NHS for MS patients who have not responded to current medications.<br />

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence's (NICE) recommendation does not mean that a drug is not approved, it only means that a drug will probably not be covered by the National Health Service (NHS) - in other words, the patient will have to pay for the prescription.<br />
<br />
Current MS medications, such as beta interferons and <a href="http://www.medilexicon.com/drugs/tysabri_973.php" target="_blank" title="More information on Tysabri (natalizumab). External link">Tysabri</a> must be injected - patients either inject it themselves or have to go to hospital every few days for supervised infusion. Gilenya is an oral pill, it represents a considerable change in MS treatment.<br />

According to an article in <i>NEJM (New England Journal of Medicine)</i>, those on fingolimod had 50% fewer disabling relapses compared to those on interferon beta.<br />

Professor Carole Longson, Director of the Health Technology Evaluation Centre at NICE said:<br />

Unfortunately our independent committee wasn't given sufficient evidence to show that fingolimod could reduce relapses considerably better than the other treatments currently being used. Based on the available clinical evidence and economic analysis, our independent committee concluded that fingolimod would not be effective good use of NHS resources. <br />
<br />
We encourage healthcare professionals, people with MS and our other relevant third parties to comment on our committee's provisional recommendation so that they can contribute to the development of this guidance."</i></blockquote><br />

There will now be a consultation. However, if the decision does not change, then the only way an MS patient will get fingolimod costs covered is if their PCT or hospital makes an exception and pays for it - resulting in a postcode lottery.<br />

</ul></div><div class="story-body" id="story_continues_2">It looked at DNA from almost 10,000 MS patients, and more than 15,000 healthy controls.</div><div class="story-body">Twenty three known genetic variations, common in the general population, that give a tiny increase in the risk of getting MS were confirmed, and 29 new ones identified.</div><div class="story-body">Another five are strongly suspected as being involved, bringing the total number of genetic variations associated with MS to 57.</div><div class="story-body">Professor Alistair Compston of the University of Cambridge told the BBC: "This is suddenly a big new number of genes to try to understand. </div><div class="story-body">"80% of the genes that are implicated by the 57 'hits' are immunological. This shouts out that this is an immunological disease at the beginning. This is a very important confirmation."</div><div class="story-body">Around 2.5 million people around the world have MS, 100,000 of them in the UK.</div><div class="story-body">MS is not directly inherited and there is no single gene that causes it. I'm always busy busy busy and manic but that could because of lack of focus with all the busy times. Now is a new begining and for today, to help me focus I need to measure how much "stuff" is floating in my life.<br />
